North Mountain Park is one of the portions of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve that are scattered throughout the area: this unit offers excellent mountain hiking trails and amazing views of the surrounding natural and urban landscapes. There are a number of paved trails that offer a bit easier of a climb, though the elevation gain still requires a great deal of physical effort. On the north side of the park, the large visitor center has exhibits that help explain the unique features and importance of both the Sonoran desert and the towering peaks of the Phoenix Mountain range. Located a few miles north of downtown Phoenix, this park is conveniently located for a half-day visit, with the smaller Lookout Mountain Preserve unit set just a little farther up the road.
